New Patron Registration

To sign up a patron for a new card:

Patrons must have their primary address in the state of California.

Patrons under 18 must have parent/legal guardian present, or have parent/legal guardian sign completed registration form.

Patrons 18 and older need photo ID.

1. Check system to see if patron already has a card. Use last name/first initial to include any misspellings. If the patron has a hyphenated or compound last name, use a keyword search to check by partial name, address, or phone number.

2. Click New Patron button in main Leap screen.

3. Scan a blank library card.

4. Fill in the patron's name. If they use a name that is not the same as their ID, please enter their legal name into the Name on Identification field.

5. Type in the birthdate, using the / between numbers.

6. Type in the patron's ZIPCODE, in the zip code field and in the street field.

7. Type in phone number. If patron does not have a phone number, when entering their password at the bottom, use whatever 4-digit PIN the patron wants to use. They can change it in their online account later.

8. Set the patron's Notification Settings: set the eReceipt if they don't want a printed checkout receipt. For the Notification Option, select whichever way the patron wants to receive hold notices, overdue notices, etc. You can add a text message with the checkbox. If they want texts, select which phone number to use and select the appropriate Wireless Carrier.

9. Under Password, enter the last four digits of the patron's Phone 1 phone number in both fields. The patron can change this later in their account online.

Additional information regarding updating/renewing/replacing library cards AND Student cards.

When creating a NEW library card, regardless of what the patron says, start with checking to see if they are in the Polaris system.
Patrons don't know the difference between Benicia & Solano, remember if they had one as a kid, understand why it matters if they have two, differentiate between remote and regular cards, or care about our procedures.

If & when multiple cards show up slow down and rectify the situation.
Is one card a student card?
      Is it current, is the patron still in school?
      This is the ONE situation where a patron can have two legitimate card numbers.
Is it an lost card and they want a replacement?
      Copy the previous number into the FORMER barcode field
Did they simply forget and the registration needs to be updated?
      Update zip code, phone and email. Copy the previous number into the FORMER barcode field
