Cataloged Items
Most items in the Locked History Cases are cataloged, meaning they have been assigned a call number. All of these call numbers have a lower case z at the end of the number and a location of LOCAL. Technical Services staff have added a clear blue label over the call number to make it easier to notice an item should be shelved in the Locked History collection.
The key for the cases is located in the KEY drawer. One key opens all the doors.
These items can not be removed from the building but can be used in the library. A clipboard is kept in a drawer at the Customer Service Desk. A photo ID is kept on the clipboard while an item or items are in use and returned when the item(s) are returned to the Desk. Staff should also note the date, the title of the item that went out as well as the patron's information.
Items most frequently requested are the Benicia High School yearbooks. We have some Benicia, Solano County, and California history items but most, if not all, also have circulating copies.
Uncataloged Items
There are a few items that are not cataloged but are stored in the Locked History Cases.
These include older Benicia phone books, and some Haines Criss/Cross Directories for Solano and Napa counties. ***HAINES CRISS/CROSS DIRECTORIES CANNOT BE PHOTOCOPIED (due to publisher limitations).
